Over the last few weeks, and in conjunction with the NYS Spring Burn Ban (March 16th – May 14th ), HFD Officers and Firefighters trained and drilled on Wildland Fire Suppression, taught by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers. The course and training included jurisdiction and responsibilities, fire behavior and weather, wildland fire elements and size-up, use of tools and equipment, general concepts related to fire suppression, proper personal protection equipment, and standards for safety.
The instruction further encompassed hands-on training with constructing and digging a fire line, securing a control line, and Forest Ranger and Fire Department roles in Wildland Fire Responses, and how the two agencies work together during Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Fire Incidents.
Over the last year Westchester County has responded to an increased number of Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Fires, due to the below average precipitation, which dries out vegetation and increases the risk of fire.
