On this past Sunday afternoon around 3:10pm, the HFD was requested to respond on the 2nd Alarm to assist the Elmsford Fire Department at the scene of a working structure fire (code 10-75) at a private dwelling with extension to the home next door.

The HFD Company E171 arrived on the scene of the Winthrop block in the Elmsford Fire District within 6mins of dispatch. Together with several other Mutual Aid companies from the surrounding areas including, Fairview Fire (FFD) E175, Ardsley FD, Irvington FD, Valhalla FD, Tarrytown FD, Hastings FD, Thornwood FD, Millwood FD, and Dobbs Ferry FD, first arriving companies arrived on scene of the 2.5 story wood frame private dwelling with heavy fire and smoke showing from the home and radiant heat extending to and melting the siding of the adjacent home.

Members assisted with stretching hoselines to the rear of the structure and began knocking down fire on the exterior. A second hoseline was stretched into the structure and began extinguishing the fire on the first floor. As additional companies arrived on scene, members began searching the home and found fire extension in the walls on the second floor and walk-up attic space. A hoseline was brought into the 2nd floor side window where interior members ultimately stretched far enough to further extinguish the fire on the upper floors.

As members were operating and gaining control of the scene, a firefighter found a water and smoke soaked 8lb puppy in the back bedroom hiding under the bed. The puppy was brought out of the structure and directly handed over to EMS. The puppy was cared for, evaluated, given O2 via a pet-mask, and released back to the owners.

Soon after, the roof was vented, all visible fire was knocked down, and overhaul was complete.
