At 11:52 am on July 1st, HFD dispatch received a call for a possible car fire next to a structure located at 74 South Central Avenue. Car 2172, Engine 170, Engine 171 and Ladder 1 from Fairview Fire Department were dispatched. Car 2172 arrived on location and stated he had a heavily involved vehicle fire threatening the exposure and was establishing South Central Ave Command. Command immediately requested an additional Engine Company from Greenville for water supply. While en route, units were advised by command that he believed the fire was extending to the exposure building. Command requested HFD to fill out the working fire assignment as a precaution.
Engine 170 arrived on location and immediately went to work stretching an 1 3/4 line to stop the fires extension into the structure on the Bravo-side. Once the threat of extension was neutralized, members began a direct attack on the main body of fire in the vehicle. Squad 15 and Engine 171 secured a positive water supply to support the initial attack, then went to work stretching additional attack lines into the exposure building as well as a line to back up the initial handline. The main body of fire was extinguished and companies began the process of overhaul to check for further extension and extinguish hot spots.
Ladder 4's arial device in addition to a 24 foot ladder were utilized to gain roof access. At approximately 1215 hours, the situation was placed under control by South Central Command. It was determined that the main electrical service wires to the gas station had been compromised due to the heat, Command requested ConEd electric to the scene. All units were clear and Command was terminated at 13:09 hours.
