At approx. 0520hrs on the morning of November 9, Hartsdale Fire was requested to relocate one engine company to the Elmsford FD for a working structure fire. Engine 170 was dispatched, upon arrival at EFD Headquarters; E-170 was immediately dispatched to the scene. As E-170 approached the scene of the fire, a charged 4" large diameter hose blocked their path into the fire block off 9A at Haven St. Although this caused a slight delay, the HFD crew scanned the area, circumvented the obstacle and found another way into the scene at Lamont St. As members were about to hit a hydrant approx. 300ft from the scene, they were told by EFD that the hydrant was a bad hydrant and wouldn't supply proper water flow. So, another hydrant was secured several blocks away on Nepperhan Ave. After making the hydrant, E-170 laid in 850ft to the first due apparatus. While staging outside the structure, command ordered the HFD crew to go to work inside the fire building relieving the first due attack team. After approximately 40 minutes inside the building cooling hotspots and checking for extension there was approximately two feet of water on the ground, and compromised q-decking hanging from the ceiling, the crew of 170 relayed to command concerns of compromised structural integrity and command ordered everyone out of the building. After a brief rehab, the HFD crew was put to work again on the roof of the structure. Along with hand tools and a circular saw, a charged line was also brought up to the roof. To increase the stability of the working area on the truss roof, a 14ft roof ladder was called up to the roof and laid across the spongy portion. Members operated off of the roof ladder and cut and removed roofing material. Once the openings were made and the burnt material removed, the hose line was used to wet down the area with water and foam. After the roof operations were complete, the E-170 crew stood fast outside the structure until Elmsford command released them from the scene. HFD packed up their tools and packed 850ft of hose. Elmsford command released Engine 170 at approximately 0900Hrs. A special thank you to the EFD for their assistance with packing E-170’s hose. |
