On Thursday May 23, Westchester County Fire Departments participated in a large-scale mutual aid drill. The drill participants were Hartsdale, Greenville, Fairview, Scarsdale, Larchmont, Pelham, Pelham Manor, Yonkers, New Rochelle, Mount Vernon, White Plains, Montrose V.A. and FDNY. The drill has been an annual occurrence but this year marked the first year that FDNY units traveled to Westchester County. The drill is designed to focus on interoperability and familiarization; topics included review of different tactics, equipment and radio frequencies. The drill had three stations with different topics- a master stream station, a roof ventilation/operations station, and a live high rise fire simulation.
Hartsdale TL-15 was detailed to the drill for the day with three firefighters and an officer. TL-15 was assigned the 1st due truck on the high-rise fire simulation. The members of TL-15 were broken into an outside team and an inside team. The outside team was responsible for attaining prime apparatus placement, deployment of the aerial to the roof for ventilation of the bulkhead, followed by dropping the bucket down to search the floor above the fire, followed by the top floor. TL-15's inside team was responsible for forcible entry, locating the fire and conveying the location to the engine company, performing a primary search of the fire apartment and controlling the door to the apartment until the engine company could launch their initial attack. |
