Hartsdale Firefighters faced a steep, rugged terrain in battling a brush fire north of the Hartsdale train station on Monday, May 4, 2015. The fire, which covered about four acres, was first reported at 12:11 pm and was brought under control in just over two hours at 3:15pm.

The fire was attacked from two locations. HFD set up command on the cul de sac of Lakeview Avenue from there firefighters used ropes to climb down the steep, rugged terrain to reach the fire. Firefighters also battled the smoky brush fire from the Bronx River Parkway side resulting in Metro North train service on the Harlem line being shut down for an hour and a half.

Hartsdale Fire was assisted by fire departments from Greenville, Fairview, Scarsdale, White Plains, Yonkers along with the Pleasantville Fire Department which sent tanker to assist in getting water on the fire from the Bronx River Parkway side. Elmsford FD provided an engine to coverage the Hartsdale Fire District.

A Red Flag warning, meaning that critical fire weather conditions exist because of a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and dry brush, had been issued for the lower Hudson valley for that day. Photos by Alan Zale
